51st State?

This video discusses the debate about whether or not Puerto Rico should be admitted as one of the United States of America. I was just wonder what you guys think about this issue.

In my opinion, I don't think the U.S. would make Puerto Rico as a state because it seems as if they would benefit from the island whether or not it is a state. We talked about how capitalism has already settled in Puerto Rico and has affected the people and the government of the island. The U.S. has already made its influence on the system and I don't believe that much would change if they admit it as a state. Also, it seems as if the people of Puerto Rico are resistent of becoming a state so they can preserve their "culture". The casitas that were built in New York was supposed to represent the innocent culture of Puerto Rico before it was corrupted by U.S. capitalism.

I agree that the U.S. won't admit it as a state, but for a different reason. There would need to be some kind of pressure on the federal government for Puerto Rican statehood, and without even a plurality of voters on the island supporting statehood, that seems unlikely to come from anywhere. I think a decision needs to be made either way. We can't have islanders remain without a vote for president if they are governed by U.S. federal law, but if the majority of Puerto Ricans do not consider themselves American we cannot admit them to the union either. I think it would be interesting to see an election that was statehood versus independence with no commonwealth option. Here is an interesting article on pro-statehood forces trying to game the system, and force such a vote: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=OGNhNDUxMzZmM2M2MWY0NjE1ZjI0MTA5MGFiYTkxMjg=

interesting...
PR has a special relationship w/ the US huh...
a special, monetary relationship

if PR were to become a State, they would be subject to the same laws and policies as we are...
and thats not gonna happen

there is too much for the PR people to lose for the sake of "statehood"

we all know under the surface its about how american can get the most profit and do the least work

I doubt that Puerto Rico would become a state for some time in my opinion because I believe that the people there will not vote for it. I believe that the United States is becoming very unpopular in the world and is begining to loose power and influence. The reason for this of course is how the U.S. has obused Latin America and other countries, and if Puerto Rico was to become a state, I believe very little would change for the people, it would just create opportunity for already wealthy whites in the U.S. for business.
